outdoor dinner party...
This year for a friends birthday we decided to have a dinner party for her on the end of "the point." Which is a mini peninsula in our town. The out of the ordinary location made it more special and we were inspired by the location to make it "hawaii-esque" without being cheesy. Here is what we did... Wailua Sodas (so yummy and made on Oahu), Salmon pineapple rice and salad in a to go box, wrapped with a leaf, votives wrapped in leaves and tied with a string, and a yummy cheesecake. It turned out great and meg's husband did a good job of keeping it a surprise... she didn't even know where she was or that we were all there!

mango season
In Hawaii it is the beginning of mango season, mmm. This is the easiest way to snack on a mango. My lovely husband learned this trick in Asia. The pictures are self explanatory really, what you do is slice vertically avoiding the mango seed... cut into the half in a grid pattern... pop the mango inside out... then eat the perfect delicious cubes!

peanut butter goodness
Karly made these cupcakes, chocolate with peanut butter frosting. The frosting was so delicious (and simple) that I had to post the recipe. Which is...
1 C. Peanut butter
1/2 C. butter
3 C. powdered sugar
3 Tbs. milk
* cream the butter and peanut butter... add powdered sugar as the mixer is going.... add the milk one Tbs at a time.
also, if you put all the frosting in a zip-lock and then cut the corner of the bag, you can "pipe" out the frosting like she did. just add sprinkles!

feeling stitchy?
i love embroidery. l-o-v-e it.
i think it is my favorite variety of craft. it's easy to do (sometimes!). it requires only a hoop, thread, fabric and needle. it's instant gratification, looking cool as soon as you start. and best of all, it's portable. for example, i started bringing little projects in the car with me when we go for drives longer than 20 minutes so i have something more to do than stare blankly out the window at the inland empire.
the other day i googled "princess and the pea" and came across this picture, thus discovering the feeling stitchy blog:
now, i am in love with this blog. there is so many fun things on their blog- free patterns, tutorials, interviews, a great list of other hip blogs and links and even "floss porn!" ;) check em out!

a post for anna k
have you ever heard of the side project? maybe i am out of it, probably. but i saw this and had to dedicate a post to anna and all the girls back in hawaii... i am still sad we never had an all girl skate jam.
this one reminds me of your fashion show at jackie's, only the dresses were way more hip!
anyways, just looking at these pictures makes me want to get out my board and bomb the hill on the point. maybe they will inspire you to get out and have some fun too!
happy monday!

i want to be like...
kassia meador.
she surfs, amazingly well. she shoots great photos (but, i bet if you got to globe trot like she does, you would have an amazing collection too!). she is artsy. and i would venture to say she is a genuinely cool person- or so i gather, having never meet her in person! but i think i want to be her best friend. every time i see her surf- on videos and the like- i want to be just like her.
fuel tv has a lil interview with her. she has lil blog. as well as a photography blog. check em out!

remember those shopping bags i was telling you about?
i finally finished 2 of them during nap time today.
as i was sewing (and consequentially ripping some seams) i came up with my own philosophy on crafting. want to hear it? it's this: just go for it and have fun. you see, i am not really good at reading patterns or following directions, usually when i make things i sort of wing it. i see something i like and want to make and i give it a try. like these shopping bags for instance, i just sort of copied a bags shape that i have and added some applique and embroidery to make it my own. it was really fun and i like that about crafting- that you can just go for it and make whatever you like. given, there are times when i want to kick myself for not being more of a perfectionist or a better planner, but i almost always happy with what i have made and have fun, even if i am not the best sewer.

i also have another crafting philosophy- i love freebies! so, if you like these bags, leave a comment. tell me which bag you like and your favorite earth friendly tip. a random winner (or two?) will be selected friday! make sure there is a way for me to get ahold of you and spread the word. or not, it may decrease your chances of winning ;)
